Schneeberg – Europe’s Highest-Altitude Mine

First mentioned in historical records in 1237, the Schneeberg Mine, situated at an altitude of 2,000–2,500 metres, is not only Europe’s highest-altitude mine but was also Tyrol’s most important lead and zinc mine.
More than 150 kilometres of tunnels and shafts, some of which can still be explored today, bear witness to its fascinating history. At its peak in the 15th century, the mine employed up to 1,000 miners. Its remarkable 27-kilometre above-ground transport system was once the longest of its kind in the world.
Today, the Schneeberg Adventure Mine brings this extraordinary history to life. Visitors can enjoy half-day and full-day guided underground tours, rides on the old mine railway, fascinating exhibitions and even overnight stays at a mountain refuge. An unforgettable experience, both above and below ground!
