A Taste of South Tyrol
In the Passeiertal Valley, hearty Alpine traditions meet the light, fresh flavours of Mediterranean cuisine. Local inns and restaurants serve everything from traditional dumplings and Bauerngreaschtl (a rustic dish of fried potatoes and meat) to Italian favourites such as pasta and vitello tonnato. The secret lies in fresh, locally sourced ingredients, which give South Tyrolean cuisine its exceptional quality and distinctive character.
Törggelen is one of South Tyrol’s most cherished autumn traditions. Dating back to the days when farmers and wine merchants gathered to sample the year’s new wine, it takes place from early October until the beginning of Advent.
In traditional South Tyrolean farmhouse taverns, known as Buschenschänke, the young wine is accompanied by delicious regional specialities, including barley soup, Schlutzkrapfen (Tyrolean filled pasta), hearty cured pork and South Tyrolean dumplings. Sweet pastries and freshly roasted chestnuts provide the perfect finishing touch.
